Administered by: Dr.O
Date: Sunday February 8, 2009
This trip is limited to 15 people so please call Bill Deckert or John Kellermann to get on the list.
Join long time falconer and ornithologist Peter Capainolo for a behind-the-scenes tour of
the world famous scientific collection of birds at the American Museum of Natural History in
New York City.
Peter Capainolo has held a falconry license since 1977 and is currently Senior Scientific
Assistant in the Department of Ornithology at the American Museum. Other career titles for
Mr. Capainolo include Adjunct Professor of biology at The City College of the City University
of New York.
The collection contains 1 million bird specimens representing essentially all of the Earth's
extant and recently extinct avifauna. Members engaging this journey will be treated to the valuable
history of the museum and the expansive collection it holds. Discussion of collection and preparation
methods along with the opportunity to examine select specimens with an emphasis on raptors with be the
focus of the field trip. Think of a favorite raptor and chances are the ornithology department
has a specimen to look at.
The group is scheduled to meet at 12:45 pm on (Sunday) February 8, 2009 on the Lower Level (LL)
of the museum near the big food court. The museum is on Central Park West @ 79th Street.
